A
group of APD retirees meet every-other Tuesday morning for
breakfast. There is no organization and it’s just fun to get
together to talk under pleasant circumstances, not at a funeral. Up
to this point over 200 people have come to breakfast at one time or
another and our members are now living nationwide. All retirees,
spouses, former and current APD employees are welcome.
Reservations are not required.
Here is a little
bit of history about the group. Back in 1988 when Al Rogers (retired
lieutenant) was battling cancer, some of his golfing buddies, Dwight Clark
(retired sergeant), Dave Michel (retired chief) & Luther Mitchell (a
good friend of Al’s from high school), would take Al out to breakfast on
occasions to give him and his wife, Betty, a break. Little by
little, more of us found out about it and were invited and eventually
there were seven of us. There was no organization or regularity,
just when Al or someone else felt like breakfast. After Al’s death
in July, 1989, we decided to continue getting together on a regular basis,
and started inviting others to attend.

Good morning Dick. I hope this miracle of modern
science finds you and your loved ones doing well.
I have been speaking by
telephone with Ed and Donna Kline about his back pain and related issues. Ed
recently fell while at home. The paramedics were called and he was transported
to Kaiser hospital where he was triaged, treated for a knee injury and then
transported to New Hills Rehabilitation Center in Orange.
I talked with
Ed yesterday (Monday) for about 20 minutes and he was in terrible pain and had
difficulty breathing. He told me he has no appetite due to the pain and is
quite concerned because he is now experiencing extreme muscle weakness and
tremors in his leg muscles. He is unable to walk even with
assistance.
Donna explained that Ed experienced polio as a child and
there is a possibility that the virus, which lay dormant for most of his life,
has reared its ugly head and is now attacking his nerve and muscle systems. The
pain is most like associated with the bulging disc in his back which is pressing
against a nerve.
There is a great deal of frustration being experienced
by Ed, Donna and the family as the medical staff seem to focus only on the knee
injury and apparently are unwilling to look into the Post-Polio Syndrome signs
and symptoms at this time. Obviously, Ed is very depressed with the lack of
progress from the medical professionals. He can receive and would greatly
appreciate phone calls and / or visitors. When calling, he is sometimes unable
to reach the telephone due to the pain associated with simple movements so, if
he doesn't answer, the desk can be contacted and someone will go to his room and
assist him in answering the phone.
The address of the facility is: 5071
E. Chapman Ave., Orange and the telephone number is 714.997.7090. The facility
is located on the north side of Chapman Ave., west of Crawford Canyon and east
of Hewes St. I am going to visit Ed this morning and will relay updated
information.
Thoughts and prayers are appreciated by the family. Thanks
for continuing to keep us informed.
Best regards,
Ray

Grace Field: passed away on March 29, 2011. Our condolences go out to the Field family for their loss.
Wade Faircloth: Joan advises that Wade is cancer free now. We are pleased to hear the good news.
Dick Davenport: The following regarding Dick Davenport was received from his daughter, Robby

Hi everyone,
Dad is doing great. He had
Angioplasty instead of the heart bypass surgery due to other issues the Surgeon
was concerned about. They put in 2 stints yesterday and 4 more today. Now all
3 main Arteries are 100% open, no more blockages. He is feeling a lot better
and hopefully they will get him up and walking after supper this evening. We
are so relieved. He should be moved to a regular room sometime Sunday and if
all goes as well as they have so far, he will be coming home Tuesday or
Wednesday. He is still in ICU this evening, but tomorrow afternoon I would
expect he can have phone calls and visitors. He is at Desert Regional Medical
Center (760) 323-6354. Thank you all for your wonderful words & prayers!
Robby
Oh yea, btw Linda [Robby’s sister] is on her way from Tennessee ... a heck of a way
to get all his girls here for Father's Day... :)

Hi Dick,
Just wanted to let you all know the
latest... Dad finally got moved out of Cardiac ICU last night into a regular
room. He is doing much better other than some medication issues we are trying
to get resolved. He is now in room #3212 at Desert Regional Medical Center in
Palm Springs. The Heart Bypass was not done as we had thought in the beginning.
They were able to do angioplasty on the three main arteries and cleared all the
blockages to 0% and so he now on the mend! Yeah! He will probably stay in the
hospital for a few more days and then get to come home.
Thank you all
for you wonderful thoughts and prayers.

They moved Dad this evening back up to Yucca Valley,
closer to home. He is doing much better today. The only thing left is to get
his strength back after being in bed for over a week. He was up & walking a
little further today, so hopefully it won't take too long before he will be back
home. We aren't sure how long he will be staying at the Care Center, so this is
where you can reach him for now.

Just in case you were not aware, I found
out about Ed Kline. I saw Donna Kline today and asked where Ed was. She
informed me Ed is flat on his back. It seems his spinal cord shrunk and doing
so it caused a ruptured disk. He is in a lot of pain and on a lot of drugs to
kill the pain. He cannot walk. Apparently he did this about a month ago.

Jerry LeMar: The following
regarding Jerry LeMar was received from Dick
Gerber:
On 6.27.11:
Hello Captain Gray,
I spoke to Mary a few
minutes ago to get an update on them both. After being transferred back to
Fullerton Gardens, Jerry fell again and was taken first to St. Judes for
treatment and then over to St. Elizabeth Heath Care-Rehab in Fullerton (2800 N.
Harbor Blvd. Fullerton, California 714.871.9202 ). Mary thinks they'll be
sending him back to Fullerton Gardens in a day or two. She was able to have one
of her caregivers drive her over for a visit a couple of days ago. Jerry no
longer knows who she is. Sad for Mary, but not knowing who she is is most
likely better for Jerry as he no longer gets agitated trying to go home with
her.
Mary had an MRI last Friday on her broken foot to try and determine
why it's not healing and should be getting some answers this week. She
continues to get get support from former DelCo co-workers and occasional calls
from oldtimers which she great appreciates. She seems to be of sound mind, but
depressed which is natural.
Thank you, Captain Gray, for allowing me to
send these occasional updates on someone that's still very special to many us
from the "olden days".
